Forgiving trait
“…if anyone has a complaint against another, even Christ forgave you so you also must do.” – Colossians 3:13
The strife between the husband and wife was a common occurrence in a family. One day their conflict reached its extreme. Ultimately, they resolved to end their marriage permanently. The husband went to pray that night. Jesus spoke to him saying “I have borne all your sins and forgiven you and accepted you as my child. I keep forgiving you when you commit sins again and again and ask for pardon. As I have forgiven you, you have to forgive your wife’s faults.” The next day he reconciled with his wife saying, “I have forgiven you as Christ forgave me.”
We read the parable of the unforgiving and unmerciful servant in the gospel of Matthew. The servant who owed his master ten thousand talents fell down before him and pleaded with him to be patient as he was not able to pay it. Then the master was moved with compassion, released him and forgave him the debt. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii and took him by the throat saying, “Pay me what you owe.” When he fell down at his feet and begged him to have patience with him, the unmerciful servant put him in prison. On hearing this, the master said to the ungrateful servant “I forgave you all the debt because you begged me. You should have taken pity on the fellow servant as I had compassion on you.” So, he commanded the wicked servant to pay all that was due to him.
Beloved in Christ, Jesus Christ himself bore our debt of sins in His body on the cross. We understand this truth and enjoy the freedom from sins. If so, how can we be hard hearted to forgive others? Our unforgiving and unforgetting mindset that magnifies the minor mistakes of others must change. If we do not forgive men their trespasses, our heavenly Father cannot forgive our trespasses. Scripture assures us that, our God will bring every deed into judgement. Let this day be a day of forgiveness and acceptance of others genuinely.
