Love for your Enemy 

"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?..." - Luke 6:32

In 1950, when the war began, Dr. Kim joined the South Korean army to fight for his country. But he soon learned that he was unprepared for the terrible onslaughts of war. When he saw his friends dying in battle, the fear of death gripped him. He prayed to God for his life. He decided that if he survived, he would learn to love his enemies. God answered that prayer. He too was saved by grace. He devoted himself to God, caring for and providing education to orphans in North Korea and China who opposed his country. Through this, he made many friends among those who had previously considered him an enemy.

But in the Bible, the prophet Jonah left a different mark. Even the miraculous act of being saved from the belly of the fish did not change his mind. Although he finally obeyed God, he said that it would be better for him to die than to see God show mercy to the people of Nineveh. Jonah was so angry with the Ninevites who did not know the difference between their right hand and their left hand that he was unable to love them.

Beloved, let us reflect on ourselves. Can we love those who hate us like Dr. Kim did? Do we seek God’s strength to love our enemies as God showed mercy to us? When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord changed Job’s condition. But Jonah’s attitude was completely different. What about us? Let’s think. Do we have the love of God in our hearts? Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Let us abide in love. Let us love others, and let us dedicate ourselves to living as witnesses to the world. Amen.
