Sufferings of Jesus

"He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth;…" - Isaiah 53:7

Before Jesus Christ was sent to this world as a savior, his birth, ministry, and the sufferings he had to undergo were all prophesied. Especially the events that will take place in his last days, crucifixion and death are written in many prophetic books.

Jesus is betrayed by Judas for 30 pieces of silver and taken to the high priest. There "Jesus was speechless" when false witnesses rose up and accused him. (Matt. 26:63) When they judged him worthy of death, they spat in his face and pricked him, and some mocked him by slapping him on the cheek.

When Jesus was sent to the governor Pilate, Pilate wanted to release him and said, "Whom shall I release to you on the feast days?" When he asked if it was Barabas or Jesus Christ, the people shouted that Barabas should be freed, and Jesus should be crucified. The centurion's soldiers stripped Jesus of his clothes, clothed him in a scarlet robe, braided a strand of crown with thorns, put it on his head, bowed down before him, mocked him, "Hail, King of the Jews," spat on him, took the rod and struck him on the head.

Jesus was sent to Herod, and Jesus said nothing in response to Herod's questions. (Luk.22:9) He was beaten and given to death. Jesus was crucified with two criminals. He was brutally killed with nails in both hands and feet. He was pierced with a spear to see if he was dead.

Dear brothers and sisters reading this! Why did he suffer so much? For whom did he suffer? Why did he calmly endure all these mockeries, reproach, humiliation, suffering and crucifixion? For us! To free us from sin and curse! If we know the power of His shed blood and accept Him as Savior and Lord, our sins can be washed away, and we can have eternal life. May God grant us this eternal life!
