Subpandi Sagasam

 

"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…" - Acts. 1:8

 

I used to read funny stories called "Subpandi Sagasam" during my childhood. Whatever this Subbandi does, he does it opposite to how it must be done. Once a village friend asked Subpandi, "Do you have a bullock in your house?" Subpandi said “no”, the friend said it is important to have a bullock and that there is no house in our village without a bullock. On hearing this Subpandi immediately bought a bullock. After a long time, the friend saw that Subpandi had tied a bullock at home and seeing that he asked him “How he was using this bullock?”. Subpandi said that since it was expensive, he would keep it in the house without exposing it to the sun and keep it very safe. The friend hit on his head after hearing this and said that the only use of a bullock is to plough the field and pull the cart.

 

A similarity can be seen between Suppandi story and the practice of using the gift of tongues in today's congregations. In Acts chapter 2 we see that, when the Holy Spirit was first poured out on the disciples all spoke in tongues. We also read that immediately after that they began to preach the gospel. In today's scripture we read that, Peter stood up with the eleven and began to preach the gospel to those standing around. Speaking in tongues is emphasized in many congregations these days. That's great! But the same importance is not shown in evangelizing. Today we speak in tongues in the congregations, but just like how Subpandi kept the bull at home without using it in the field. We forget the purpose for which it was obtained.

 

In 1 Corinthians 14:4 we read that when we speak in tongues we are edified. Yes, a tongue is a wonderful gift that God has given us to strengthen us in the Lord, to warm us in the spirit. If you have not had this experience, pray and seek it. At the same time speaking in tongues is not only to edify ourselves; But also, to lead ourselves straight to the Lord's command, preach the gospel to the whole world. Let's speak in tongues. At the same time, also go out to evangelize people who are going to hell.
