Fasting

 

"Consecrate a fast;…" - Joel 1:14

 

Fasting is essential to the Christian life. Fasting is something that can move the greatest God. But today it is being forgotten. This is due to ignorance of its benefits. Let's see its benefits in brief.

 

God's mercy can be obtained: 

When Jonah announced that God was going to destroy the people of Nineveh because of their sin, everyone from children to adults, fasted and prayed. (Jonah 3:5-8) God was moved by this and showed mercy by not destroying Nineveh.

 

Banquet before enemies: 

Haman plans to destroy not only Mordecai, who does not worship him, but his entire Jewish clan. They fasted and prayed for three days. After that, the good deeds of Mordecai came to the knowledge of king. Mordecai was honoured by royal command to be done by Haman. Not only that, but the Jewish family was saved.

 

Defeat Satan: 

Jesus Christ fasted and prayed for forty days before starting his first ministry. Then he defeats Satan who opposed him. The one possesed by demon who came to a disciple for healing, when the disciples could not overcome him by prayer, Jesus said, "This caste of devils will not depart except by fasting and prayer." (Matthew 17:21)

 

Protection Available: 

Nebuchadnezzar fasted and prayed for safety from the robbers when Nebuchadnezzar brought the gold, silver and all kinds of things back to the Jerusalem church that he had taken from the church. Protected from long distance and safely included in the Jerusalem church. That means they completed the task successfully.

 

Dear reader, do you want to receive mercy from God? Want victory and honour in places of shame? Fast and wait at his feet. He will provide the strength and guide you. If you taste fasting and enjoy its benefits, you can’t be without fasting. Give it a try this year! May you find blessings, happiness and peace.
