Not just dance. . .

 

"...Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" - Mark 16:15

 

In the scriptures when God blessed, the people of God celebrated it with dance. When the Red Sea parted and there was great deliverance, Miriam and the women who were with her worshiped the Lord with dance. When the ark of the covenant was brought back to Jerusalem, David was full of joy and praised God with a dance. It is good to dance and worship the Lord with such fullness of heart. But the same dance runs the risk of becoming entertainment without God as the center. Such dances can cause stumbling in gatherings where young men and women gather. Few worship services today are like a musical concert in cinema. Our methods of worship should not become a stumbling block for anyone.

 

In Psalm 137 we meet a crowd of sad-faced people standing on the banks of the Babylonian river, unwilling to play their musical instruments. These are the Israelites who were sent captive to Babylon as a result of their sin. In today's scripture the Lord prophesies that these captives will return to their own land. He says that the God will dance with joy. Jeremiah 31:10 commands us not to stop with the dance but to declare this salvation of God to the islands far away.

 

Beloved, it is good for us to rejoice in the Lord, to worship the Lord, and to dance. But these are not the end of discipleship. We have been given a royal command to go into all the world and tell the good news of Jesus Christ. The gospel is the only antidote to people who have lost true happiness because of sin, who do not understand the purpose of life, who live in sickness and many other kinds of pain. Many Christians today have stopped somewhere in their lives and forgotten the command to "go away." Some people stayed with prayer, singing and dancing. Those of you who are reading this message, don't stop anywhere and do something to evangelize the nation. Go wherever you can and evangelize. In places where it is not possible, support missionary work by prayer and sacrifice. Alleluia!
