"…Run in such a way that you may obtain it" - 1 Corinthians 9:24

 

Ukrainian gymnast "Larisa Vetrinina" holds a record of 18 Olympic medals. She earned those medals by winning the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympic Games. Then in 2012, when Michael Belp won his 19th gold medal in the 4200 meters (freestyle) relay at the London Games, the record that had stood for 48 years at the Olympics was broken. "Vetrinina has been forgotten in history," said the publisher of the magazine International Gymnastics. Yes, old records are broken when new records are made.

 

The apostle Paul reminds us that sometimes hard work is forgotten. Athletes subject their bodies to rigorous, disciplined training in order to earn perishable medals. But their skills and the medals they won are forgotten in a period of time. How much do athletes overextend their body parts for a medal that will perish with the world? We read in the epistles that when we look at the Scriptures it is written that the prize is set before us, the eternal crown that will not perish. So we have to consider that our flow, our effort is very important.

 

Beloved in Christ, the old year is over and we are ready to enter a new year. At the same time, the Holy Bible instructs us to keep moving forward until we reach heaven in our spiritual race that we are now running. The apostle Paul advises to run as you deserve when he writes in the letter to the Corinthians. Let us run carefully to Jesus lest we lose the object of our race. For our God is not unjust to forget your running and effort. May the almighty God grant you the grace to continue your journey in the coming new year. Amen!
