Cheerful word

“A man has joy by the answer of his mouth…” – Proverbs 15:23

“Mummy…Mummy…” murmured the little boy at midnight. His mother sat and looked at him steadily in the dim light. The little boy said feebly to his mother “I am not able to breathe properly. Am I going to die?” His mother gave him an assurance saying “No such things will happen as I have dedicated you for serving God. You will for sure grow big and do God’s service. No harm will befall you as you are committed to God. He will take care of you.” These comforting words soothed him and chased his fear away. His mother cuddled him to sleep. Later, he recovered completely.

Nabal was a very rich man. Nabal was enjoying the feast with his servants and the shearers who were shearing his sheep. At that time David sent his messengers to ask for the servants whatever came to his hand. But Nabal refused to give them anything. He reviled them saying that he did not know where they were from and he was not ready to share the delicious food items he had prepared for his servants. But David and his friend were very good to Nabal’s servants. They did not hurt them. They protected them like walls. But Nabal returned evil for good. So, David was infuriated and he decided to wreck vengeance on Nabal and destroy all his possessions. On hearing about the plan of David, Nabal’s wife Abigail rode swiftly to David taking varieties of goodies and presents for him. She took Nabal’s blame on her and asked him to forgive the trespass. Then she asked, “Why should you shed blood without cause, when you have been anointed the ruler of Israel? David heeded her voice and advice and her words changed his mind and prevented him from avenging Nabal.

Beloved ones, what kind of words proceed from our mouths? Let us ponder. Are our words cordial and pleasing to change revenge into reconciliation? or Are our words corrupt and bitter like Nabal’s? Gracious words must proceed from our mouth. We must speak the words that are good for necessary edification and that it may impart grace to the hearers. Shall we take a resolution to utter words that are full of grace? Our words must heal the broken hearted and comfort and console the distressed.  May God pour gracious words upon our lips!
