"…an hour is coming when you will worship the Father" - John 4:21
Christianity entered Karnataka in the 16th century with the arrival of the Portuguese. Then in 1545 it began to grow further with the arrival of St. Francis Xavier. Christians were found in large numbers from Karwar to Mangalore on the west coast of Karnataka. All of them belonged to the Roman Catholic sect. They were more catholic in this region than in other parts of Karnataka.
Christianity is in a backward condition in the Indian state of Karnataka. However, Christianity has played a major role not only in reforming it, but also in improving education and philosophical knowledge.
According to the 2011 census, Christianity was only 1.87% in Karnataka. Protestant Christians are also present here. Many of them were converted to Christianity by British missionaries during the days of British rule in India. However, the British converted the people voluntarily to Christianity. Both classes are abundant in Bangalore. St. Mary's Basilica is the oldest church in Bangalore. The number of Christians in 2001 was 10,09,164 and in 2011 it was 11,42,647. AD There is also a reference that the apostle Thomas went to Mysore to spread Christianity, the capital of Karnataka in 52 AD.
In 2008, people living in South Karnataka region were heavily attacked by others and the affected districts were Udupi, Chikmagalur, and Tatsana Kanada. Even during such incidents, Christianity in Karnataka has developed in many stages for the glory of the Lord.
The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few. (Mat 9:37) So let us act more quickly before the coming of our Jesus and convert Karnataka his own state.
- Mrs. Jayanthi Pakyanathan
