"…And he who wins souls is wise" - Proverbs 11:30
All those whom are chosen by our Lord convey a message to us in one way or another. By their lives and even in their deaths, they have left us a message. Thomas, who was the weakest in faith among the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ and who believed only after touching his wounds, served in the state of Kerala in Indian country, after him many missionaries followed! Let us try to briefly consider their ministry.
Thomas came to India at AD 38. He sailed and reached the coast of Kerala. He started preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in those places. King Kondaparas of Kerala helped him a lot. Thomas built 7 Christian churches there. When the Portuguese arrived in the 15th century, they did the ministry on a large scale. People belonging to different denominations accepted the gospel. They treated everyone equally without any partiality or inferiority.
Missionaries were not only interested in evangelizing. They also established educational institutions, hospitals and other social service centres. They received support from local rulers. Homeopathic medicine was brought to Kerala by missionaries. Benjamin Bailey and Henry Baker belonged to the Christian Missionary Society (CMS) which operated in Kottayam from 1813 to 1930. They established a grammar school at Kottayam and a girls' school at Alappuzha.
Hermann Gundert translated the Old Testament from Hebrew and the New Testament from Greek into Malayalam. Rev. Mead from the London Mission Society (LMS) started vocational schools in Travancore 1817-1873. His wife started schools for girls. In these ways the missionaries severed in Kerala and saw revival.
Beloved, who is reading this, you are a vessel chosen by the Lord! Do something for him! May God bless you. Amen!!
