Gujarat

Christianity is a minority religion in Gujarat which is an Indian state. The Portuguese controlled Daman and Diu on the Gujarat coast for centuries. They introduced Catholic religion. In the 16th century, Gujarat came into contact with Christianity. French missionary Jordanus Catalani came to Surat in 1320. He was the first European to start ministry in Gujarat.

 

The Charter Act of 1813 passed by the British Parliament allowed Christian missionaries to enter territories controlled by the British Company. Missionaries John Taylor (1821), Joseph Taylor (1852), J.V.S. Taylor (1881) and Dr. G.B. Taylor were permited to come to India. Missionaries established schools in the first half of the 20th century. Gujarat has a diocese of the Church of North India. It is the largest Protestant Christian denomination along with the CNI and CSI churches. Salvation Army and Alliance Churches can also be found in the state.

 

God has raised many ministries there so that the people of Gujarat may find Christ. Ministers face many objections while doing ministry. One example of this was when, two missionaries were passing through the mountain pass for their evening meeting. A group of people with guns were lurking with the intention to kill missionaries that day. As they passed that way the group aimed and started firing. God was their protector and protected them in such a way that not a single bullet from the guns came out of the gun. The crowd that came out to shoot was shocked, "What magic is this?" They fell at the feet of the missionaries and said, "Tell us about this God. We will accept him." They sat at the same place and accepted Jesus as their saviour. Even today, Jesus is performing many such miracles in the state of Gujarat. Amen! Alleluia!
