Bengal

"…Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” – Mark 16:15

One of the grains of wheat sown for Christ, William Carey's work for the Revival of the nation of Bengal was immense. Born in England, he learned many languages, became a preacher and obeyed the call of the Lord. He came to Calcutta with his wife and children on a Danish ship. They offered their body, soul and spirit to our land Bharat. He never returned home.

New place, new climate, new customs, new language, even though he wanted to learn Bengali language and then start evangelistic work. He learned Bengali, Marathi and Sanskrit while working in a jute factory in Malta.

In 1800, William Carey, William Ward and Joshua Marsman started evangelistic work from the Danish town of Serampore. Later, after the death of his wife and his child due to ill health, he continued his evangelistic and educational work without going back. He translated the New Testament in Bengali at 1801. It was printed by William Ward, Joshua Marsman and his wife Anna. They started the education institute with 40 students in Dinajpur. The Serampore Educational Institution became a university. He is the founder of the world church councils. He was also involved in social reform in India and was responsible for stopping the deadly evil of " burning wife to death, when husband dies " (sati). His words in Bengali language attracted non-religious people to his side in accordance with the fact that "Jesus Christ is not only for foreign country people but also to all countries". His aim was to learn many languages and translate the scriptures into respective languages. The translated copies and the printing press went up in flames, which was his great effort. Undaunted, he resumed his translation work. Realizing that learning the Bible requires academic, the journey started with primary education and basic knowledge, grew into a university. Thus, the seeds sown by him in the land of Bengal, proclaim the love he had for God. "Expect great things from God and achieve great things for God" was his slogan. Amen!
