Manipur

 

"the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light" - Matthew 4:16

 

Manipur is the smallest state of India. On 21st January 1972, the state of Manipur was declared as a separate state with the recognition of the government. Meiti, Naga, Kukki-Sin-Miso people live in this state. Manipuri language is spoken among these people. The gospel planted here transformed warring tribes into peace-loving believers.

 

The gospel of Jesus Christ reached Manipur from both sides. One attracted mainly the Naga tribes from the north. The other reached from the south through Mizoram mainly to the Kukki-Sin-Miso tribes. In 1894, a missionary named William Pettigrew came to Imphal, the capital of Manipur, and preached the gospel to the tribes over there for the first time. He also started a school for boys. He highlighted the love of Christ along with educational work. He started his missionary work at Ukhrul. After six long years of tireless effort, 12 of his students decided to accept Christ. In 1926, he was instrumental to translate English Bible in Pongio and to print it, among the Tangul-speaking people. In the following years , Christian missionary work began to grow here.

 

41% Christians live in the state of Manipur, one of the north-eastern states known as the Seven Sisters of India. We must have heard about the riots that started a couple of months ago in this evangelical state. Let us pray that today's young generation will minister among such people. As Paul testifies about my co-workers Priscilla and Aquila (Romans 16:3) who laid down their necks for my soul, let us also go to such tough places and proclaim the testimony of God. Is it not our duty to pray for the salvation and peace of Manipur? Ponder!
