Uttar Pradesh

 

"The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom” – Isaiah 35:1

 

Uttar Pradesh is one of the driest states in India for Gospel ministry. This is the state where it is rare to see a single Christian per postal pincode. It is estimated that nearly 20% of our nation's population resides here. The man chosen by the Lord to evangelize the largest state of India was Stanley Jones from America.

 

Stanley Jones is from Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He was a member of the American Methodist Church and arrived in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh after a long journey in 1907. Stanley Jones was supported by the American Missionary Society. He used to do his ministry in all areas of Uttar Pradesh including the literate people and the most downtrodden. Stanley started the first Christian Mission Hospital in Uttar Pradesh and evangelized the people. In many places he stood on the streets and preached the gospel. Many persons were saved here and there due to his continuous efforts. His book "The Christ of the Indian Roads" was seen as a further motivation to know Jesus among many non literate Christians. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, was inspired by his ministry. Stanley Jones was a good friend of Gandhiji.

 

After Uttar Pradesh, he wandered and ministered in some North Indian states including Maharashtra. He founded a Christian Ashram and through it preached the gospel to thousands. In evangelical arid Uttar Pradesh, Stanley Jones's earnest efforts began to bear fruit. The scriptures planted by Stanley Jones have sprouted and are fruitful today. Although there are many missionaries working in Uttar Pradesh today, we can never forget the mission of Stanley Jones, who pioneered them all. Let us praise God for this wonderful man of God.
