Be Generous
"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed” - Proverbs 19:17
One Easter morning, a pious man was going to service. On his way, a poor man was shivering in the cold without proper clothing. Seeing this scene, his heart was moved. He was afraid that he would freeze to death by the time he went home to fetch another dress for him. Immediately he took off the long coat he was wearing. Tore it into two and wrapped one half on himself because of the cold and left the other half for the poor man and went to the church. Suddenly he saw a vision before his eyes. God of Glory, appearing with half robe. The man saw it and wondered if it was Jesus Christ that I had helped. Alas, he thought that if I had known that it was Jesus I would have gave the entire coat.
We are living in a time where there are very few people who act in the best interests of others with compassion. People don't like the embarrassment that they face when helping others. We can't help others without embarrassing ourselves. In today's reading we read about the Macedonian congregation who gave despite being in great tribulation. Yes, unless we drink from the same cup that Christ drank from, we cannot experience the great joy that comes from helping others at the right time.
Beloved! Do we have the heart to help others despite our shortcomings? Do we tolerate it even if it hurts us to give to others? Do we give to others until our hands are hurt?
