"…for God loves a cheerful giver" - 2 Cor 9:7

 

An old man was very hungry and went to eat in a hotel. There he asked the supplier “How much is a meal?”. He said “50 rupees”. Immediately the old man counted the rupees in his purse and asked for the food at a cheaper price? Immediately the supplier said 45 rupees if eaten without curd. The old man opted that and paid Rs 45 for meal without curd and paid Rs 5 to the supplier. The supplier asked, you had 50 rupees, why didn’t you eat with curd? The old man said, "I would have not had money to give you, that's why" and left. The supplier said this Rs.5 is special and kept it in his inner pocket.

 

During the days when Jesus Christ lived on this earth, he was sitting in front of the offering box in the church and watching the people offering their offerings. Then he called the disciples and praised only one's offering. That was the offering of poor widow who offered two pennies! Humans may take it for granted. Many might have offered more. So, the value of two pennies may have been less. But in God's sight those two coins were highly appreciated! The reason is that "the offering itself was not from surplus but that was only what she had." In the world there is a proverb , "Lend what you have in excess ". But Jesus Christ says it is better to oppress you and to give what is yours. Because giving should be an expression of love. It should not be out of compulsion or for name and fame.

 

The Macedonian congregation exemplified out of perfect joy in the midst of tribulation and poverty and gave cheerfully. Nowadays we only think about saving. Seeing others situations and helping tendency has reduced. Wherever it was given as an expression of love, God's attention was drawn and he appreciated. He says Mary, anointed with lavender oil, did her best. When the sinful woman his feet wet with tears, wiped with her hair and anointed with perfume, he praises her saying “she loved so much”.
