For the sake of Jesus.
"To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some" - 1 Cor 9:22
Pastor Robert Smith was a lecturer at Southern Baptist Seminary. A theology student from his class went to an African country to be a missionary and strengthen relationships. While she was there, one day it was time to eat. She thought they would give a separate plate. But it was not given. They brought a huge vessel with dish and placed on the table. It is called community vessel. Everyone ate out of that bowl. This missionary who has come from a very civilized culture, was afraid to eat using her hand. And none of those who ate from it washed their hands. The missionary did not even know what food was in the vessel. But she understood that if she wanted to preach to the African people and declare the love of Jesus to them, she would definitely have to give up on this and eat.
We read in Isaiah 43:4 that I will give men in your stead, and nations in exchange for your life. A grain of wheat remains alone unless it falls to the ground and dies. Jesus said that the dead grain of wheat will bear much fruit. (John 12:24) In the ministry of the gospel, do we serve to the extent of giving life or not? But we must make small sacrifices. It may be seen as something we do not like or couldn’t tolerate. But for the sake of the gospel, it is necessary to give up some things.
Soul gain seems to be slightly easier path. But it also involves hard work. The only way to bear fruit is to put a lot of effort to bring a person to Christ. When Jesus preached the gospel to the Samaritan woman, he preached the gospel while he was thirsty and hungry. Only with self-loathing and hard work can we see good results in our ministry.
