The elderly

 

“Thou shall raise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the Lord.” - Leviticus 19:32

 

There was a call to St. Joseph's hospital. The conversation between the telephone operator and the caller. 

 

Operator: Hello, who is speaking? 

 

Caller: I want to know about the condition of a patient named Narma Finley. Please call someone who can help her. 

 

Operator: Okay mam, let me help you. Please tell me the name of the patient's name and her room number.

 

Caller: (in a scared voice) Narma Finley, room number 302.

 

Operator: Let me ask the nurse, please wait. (Came back in a few minutes). Mam its a good news. She said, you don’t have any problem, your blood test results came, your blood pressure is normal. He said, the doctor told her to discharge you tomorrow.

 

Caller: Thank you, I was worried. May God bless you for telling me the good news. 

 

Operator: yea, is Narma your mother? 

 

Caller: No, I am Narma Finley in room 302, nobody told me anything so i had to call to know this. 

 

We can see that old people are ignored in society and families. We can see their speech is not listened to and their feelings are not respected. But the Bible orders us to honour the elderly. There are a lot of examples in the Bible for this. Joseph honoured his old father, Ruth obeyed her mother-in-law. Yea, we can see that God honoured them for they honoured the elderly. Let us also respect our parents in our home. Let us have some time to talk to them. Let us help them and fulfil the law of God.
