Phoebe, an outstanding woman

“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” – Proverbs 31:31

On March 9, 1839, a New York doctor and his wife Walter and Phoebe became the proud parents of a little girl whom they named Phoebe, after her mother. Phoebe led a pious life. She grew in godliness and the love of Jesus and she was married to a wealthy gentleman Joseph Knapp. 

Phoebe Knapp had become very rich and famous. But she was longing for a great revival in church and community. She believed that Christianity should aid the poor and foster reforms. She willingly served the poor, oppressed and wretched with a loving heart. An international charitable trust named Sunshine was run with an intention to light and brighten up the lives of the poor, depressed and widows. She was a prominent social leader and a Sunday school worker. She was involved in many reforms and gave a large sum of money for the poor and worked diligently for their betterment. 

Phoebe was a brilliant and prolific song composer. In the evenings she held music concerts named “Musicale” She composed music for the songs of eminent writers. Besides she had written Christian books. Once she went to meet her close friend Fanny Crosby who was a well-known poet, lyricist and composer although she was blind. Phoebe said to Fanny, “A sweet tune is ringing in my heart; I will play it on the piano; you write the verse for it.” Fanny knelt down and prayed and wrote the verse down fitting them to the melody. It began with “Blessed assurance Jesus is mine” which is a popular and inspiring song for ages. This was the story behind this beautiful song. 

Beloved ones, there are people who are oppressed and wearied, poor and miserable around us. Shall we spend our talents, abilities, wealth and time for others? Shall we submit ourselves to comfort the heart of the needy and make them smile. May God be gracious and help us to be outstanding women! Amen.
