I thirst

 

“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.” - John 19:29

 

Fifth verse Jesus spoke on the cross

If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (John 7:37,38) like this Jesus said He will quench our thirst but He said I thirst. His thirst on the cross was about the people. Prophet Isaiah beautifully said in Isaiah 53:11 as "He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied" about the thirst of Jesus. Our Lord's biggest thirst is that people should come to His herd for they were created in His own image. We will be those quenching His thirst when we work to bring strayed sheep to Him. 

 

I want to share an incident here. In 1780 Robert Raikes was burdened about the illiterate poor children living around London city. He tried to do something to improve their life. He made few women to open schools and teach class. Those teachers used Bibles as text books, taught them to read, and the wisdoms from the Bible. It was named as Sunday school, started with a 100 children it touched the lives of thousands of boys and girls. In 1831 more than 10 lakhs of children were enrolled in Sunday school. 

 

Instead of mentioning it as the effort of a man named as Robert, we can say he understood the love of God in the Bible. The kindness we show on those who are hungry and orphaned is what quenches the thirst of our Lord. Let God guide us so that we can Quench His thirst.
