Will power or God’s power?
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” – Acts 1:8
If a pen says, “I know everything; I can write everything wisely and superbly”, how funny it will be! We cannot but laugh at the remark. But if the pen submits itself into the hands of a writer, it can be a source of blessings to many others. Likewise, if we stand on our own strength, we cannot perform anything great for Christ. When we are governed by the Holy Spirit, God can work in us amazingly.
Having this truth in our mind, let us view the life of Peter. Peter told Jesus that he would never be made to stumble because of Him and even if he had to die with Him, he would not deny Him. But Jesus said, “Assuredly I say to you that this night before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Peter did not accept the truth. The angels might have laughed at him. As foretold, Peter began to curse and swear and he denied Jesus saying that he did not know the man. His willpower failed. Peter was so weak and timid that he could not confess Jesus even though he wanted to do it. The same Peter, when he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he submitted his will to God and he received power to do God’s work. He bore witness of Christ and proclaimed the word of God with intensity to the same multitude who saw and heard him deny Jesus. He considered his life of no value to him and he spoke with remarkable faith, courage, and rigor. Could he do it on his own will power? No, that was made possible only by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Dear sisters and brothers, it is enough of those futile and fruitless days when we tried with our own strength to do things and get things done. Let us yield everything to God’s spirit just as a pen submits itself to the writer. Once filled with the Holy Spirit, by the fulness of the spirit we can be living witnesses proclaiming His Holy name for His glory.
