Gandhi and Christianity

 

“Then He said to the disciples, "It is impossible that no offenses should come, but wow to him through whom they do come!” - Luke 17:1

 

We all remember the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi on October 2nd. Among all the freedom fighters, we call him Mahatma because of his nonviolence. How many of us know that he chose nonviolence because of The Bible. 

 

Gandhi accepted the Bible as a holy book and read it carefully. He was induced to fight enemies through nonviolence when he read the sermon on the mount " But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. (Mathew 5:39)". He read the bible and he wanted to practice it and also reflected it in his actions. He said Jesus is the best teacher for humanity, New Testament gave me peace and happiness. He didn’t receive salvation even though he read the Bible and practiced it, the reason for this is Christians. I saw Christians lashing out on Hindus and Hindu gods. I cannot accept it. So, I hated Christians. I am not a Christian, he said. We as a Christian should think about this. 

 

My dear, the Bible is a great treasure given by God. If we meditate on it, we can get lot of advice and prosper in life. We have to follow what said in the bible, instead if we say I don’t like those who are following the Bible so I’m not following it, we will be at a loss. We have to see the flip side as well. We as a follower of Christ, is our actions or our words a reason for our neighbors to come closer to God or depart from God we should think. If yes, we are the tempting them. Jesus says, "woe to those who tempt others". Jesus says, " it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea". And today's devotion reminds us one more thing. If Mahatma read a few portions and implement it and became a successful person, we are reading Bible many times and are we successful? Let us realize the greatness of the Bible. Let Bible become our life.
