Love that pays dearly

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son...” - John 3:16

Long time ago, a very affluent gentleman lived all alone in a magnificent mansion in France. He could have led a royal and luxurious life with pomp. But he took only ordinary meals of a middle-class family. In addition, his attire was normal. On the whole he led a very simple life. People of the town mocked at him saying, “For whom is he saving all wealth without enjoying and spending anything?” Years passed. The rich man passed away. When they read the will, the legal document of the rich man, they were shocked. He had drafted a will which said that his massive wealth was to be spent for the people in the town to get sufficient water as they had scarcity of water for years.

Christ Jesus emptied himself by taking the form of a lowly servant. He became poor that through His poverty we might become rich. God expects two things. The first one is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind (Mathew 22:37). Our wholesome dedication and devotion unto God must be only out of love and not as an obligation. God tested Abraham to know if he loved Him with whole heart. Thus, He asked Abraham to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering to Him (Genesis 22:2). He was eager to know if Abraham loved Him more than his son and trusted him truly.

Secondly, we must love our neighbors as ourselves (Mathew 22:39). These two laws are like the two pans of the balance. To bring home this message the parable of “Good Samaritan” was narrated. Genuine love makes us help others voluntarily and spend what we possess for them with pleasure. For anyone who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God, whom he has not seen. Only if we love the people we come across in life and whom we meet, we can love God. The good Samaritan did not mind spending his wine, oil and money and using his transport for the dying man.

Beloved, do we possess love that pays? Let us examine. We cannot love without paying the price for it. Let us have the love that pays and so that it will be useful to us and others. Hallelujah!
