Do not obey

 

“He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me” - Matthew 10:37

 

You may ask, “What a queer title is this first step in Christianity and the title seems contrary.” But if we delve intensively, we find that the Bible has listed, in which matter and at what time we should not obey. Let us ponder it. 

 

To parents: The fifth commandment says, “Honour your father and mother that your days may be long upon the land.” This is the commandment with promise. So, when we honor our parents, we will be blessed. Moreover, the Bible warns us that the raven of the valley will pick the eye out if we mock and scorn obedience to our parents.

 

But, at the same time, the Bible teaches us not to be submissive to the parents if they are against their children who desire to be the follower of Christ or if they become an obstacle to their children who have God’s calling to ministry. (Mathew 10:37). The children can defy their parents when they plan to yoke their saved son or daughter with an unsaved or non-believer. (II Corinthians 6:14). We must honor our parents and take great care of them. But if any matter is said against the Bible and not based on the word of God, priority must be given to the word of God. We should convince our parents of what God says in a respectful and polite way without getting angry or frustrated.

 

To the Government: The Bible instructs us to be subject to the governing authorities, to obey the rules and regulations and to pay taxes. But at the same time, we need not be submissive if the Government law prevents us from going into the world and preaching the gospel to every creation which is the great commission of God. When Peter and other apostles were strictly commanded not to teach in the name of Jesus, they answered to the high priest saying, “We ought to obey god rather than men.” Daniel, the star of the Old Testament prayed and gave thanks before God disregarding the king’s decree.

 

Dear youths, let us keep walking safely in God’s ways without turning right or left and obeying if the matter is in accordance with the word of God and defying if it is contrary to the Bible.
