Covetousness

“…When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab got up and went down to take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite” - I Kings 21:16.

Covetousness is mentioned in the Ten Commandments as a grave sin. Covetousness is the strong desire to possess all worldly things in abundance. Without being allured by the possessions of others, we must be content with what we possess. Otherwise, this grievous offence will plunge us into ruin and destruction. This had occurred in the life of King Ahab.

Naboth’s vineyard was next to the palace of King Ahab. Ahab intended to possess Naboth’s vineyard and convert it into a kitchen garden. But Naboth rejected the offer as the vineyard was the inheritance of his fathers. On hearing his denial, Ahab’s wife Jezebal, using her power, got Naboth murdered deceitfully. When Ahab was about to take possession of the vineyard, the word of the Lord came to Elijah saying, “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick Ahab’s blood.” Ahab could have altered any one of his vineyards into a vegetable garden. Instead, he confiscated that only vineyard owned by Naboth by murdering him. Thus, discontentment drove him to avarice. In the end, God brought calamity on Ahab and his posterity.

Dear brothers and sisters, do we yearn to possess something belonging to another, although we are blessed with everything? Do we plan deceitfully to seize that particular thing from them by some way or the other? Being the rulers of the Kingdom, Ahab and Jazabel exercised their authority with pride and thought no one could resist them. But we must be diligent. The Lord God will plead the case. If God argues the case, the entire family and even the posterity will be harmed. It is God who justifies. The Proverb says, “Covet all, lose all”. But God’s judgment is awful. The Bible says, “Godliness with contentment is great gain”. So let us stop coveting and turn to God to receive blessing for us and our families.
