The dew of compassion.

“..Jesus... saw a great multitude and He was moved with compassion for them and healed their sick” - Matthew 14:14

A certain sister who was touched by the love of God, longingly prayed for a chance to extend that Godly love for someone. She heard about an old lady who was suffering terribly from a terminal disease in her town. The old lady was forsaken by her family and neighbors. Being despised by all the relatives, she stayed in a desolate house in a remote area and she was counting her days. The sister came forward to help the old lady expecting nothing as reward. She got up very early and carried out her responsibilities in her family perfectly and then proceeded to the old lady’s house to serve her. She cleaned the non- healing wounds with foul smell and bound them and fed her up. But her selfless service was not appreciated by the old lady. Instead, she grumbled and rebuked her whenever she was conscious as she could not bear the intensity of the pain. But the sister continued to take care of her out of compassion.

When Jesus saw a great multitude, He was moved with compassion for them and healed their sick. In the city of Nain, a dead man was being carried out. He was the only son of his widowed mother. She lost all hope in her life. Jesus had compassion on the widow and told her not to weep and touched the coffin. When Jesus said, “arise” her dead son arose. Henry Newman, an English theologian and a scholar had said “It is very difficult to have compassion because compassion goes through the feelings of others. It is a strong feeling of sympathy and sadness for the sufferings, frailty and loneliness of others and a desire to help them and to show it in action.

When we happen to see a wounded bird or a bruised boy and if we pass by feeling sorry, it is not compassion. It is just feeling of pity. Compassion will be revealed in action. When Jesus saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them because they were weary and scattered like sheep having no shepherd. Does our heart break on seeing people without the Savior? Lord Byron, the famous poet says, “The dew of compassion is a tear” What is our reaction when a wounded and half-dead man is seen by us? We, who have basked in the compassion of our Lord, must reflect the compassion on others.
