Rottenness
“…Envy is rottenness to the bone” - Proverbs 14:30
I was reminded of the educational system in nineties. In those days rank cards were issued to the students. When the rank cards were distributed by the teachers, our eyes would not rest in our cards. Our eyes would be wandering from one card to the other cards of students who were in front, back and next to us. We not had felt jealous of the first rank holder. We envied him when the teacher appreciated him and asked to give a round of applause to him, then when he was appointed as the leader and when he was minding the students in the absence of the teacher and when he was noting the names of the talkative students. Thus, the list had gone on. At one point, whatever the topper did made us feel jealous of him. Now, if we think about those events, we feel like laughing but at the same time regretting our wicked nature.
In the Holy Bible, Miriam and Aaron were jealous of Moses and spoke against him. So, the anger of the Lord was aroused. They were rebuked by God and Miriam became leprous. Then the Israelites were jealous of Moses and Aaron (Psalms 106:16). Moses and Aaron were God’s elect to be the leaders and to have supreme authority over all Israelites. The Israelites questioned their leadership. We read in Psalms 106:17 that as they envied, “The earth opened up and swallowed Daton and Abiram and his faction.” Those two verses teach us a lesson of warning.
Beloved, how is our mindset? Do we envy our neighbor and the families when they receive goodness from God? Let us ponder. In the Bible envy is compared to a disease that rottens the bones and we also read that no one can stand before jealousy. Let us do away with envy from our heart and learn to appreciate and encourage others when they thrive. Then we shall he exalted. If we feel jealous of our relatives, friends or co-workers or servants of God, let us get rid of such feeling. Envy will destroy us. We may have competitive spirit but not the spirit of jealousy. Let us live peacefully not yielding to the thought of envy.
