I thirst

 

“Jesus… that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst” - John19:28 

 

The fifth word of Jesus from the cross:

Those were the days when India just got independence. The process of dividing Pakistan which shared a border with Rajasthan was underway. Veltman of England was one of the chief officers who were setting the border line. He was a godly man. He monitored the workers in the hot sun throughout the day and in the evenings, he proclaimed the gospel to the workers. On a full moon day, he was preaching the word of God to 40 men in the bright moon light. He spoke clearly about salvation, sanctification, holiness, judgment and the kingdom of God. One of the workers stood up and asked if he had any written evidence for what he was speaking about. At once Veltman said “Yes, I have two bibles translated in your own language. “He ran into his tent and came back holding the two Bibles. All the forty hands were stretched out for the Bible.

 

Veltman was surprised to behold the longing and thirst of the all the forty people. Their burning desire for the Bible ignited more spiritual fire in him and he did his ministry zealously. Veltman’s desire and thirst was that all Indians must get to know Jesus and grow in understanding Him.

 

We read that Jesus thirsts. The one who bore the sins of the world, longs and desires all men to be saved and not to be perished. If there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, how the entire heaven will rejoice when multitude of people are saved. This happening can quench the thirst of Christ Jesus who shed His blood for us. One major part of God’s desire can be fulfilled by winning souls for Him. Let us come forward to quench the spiritual thirst of Jesus by being soul winners. May god strengthen us in our efforts!
