Where is God?

“About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?” – Matthew 27:46

The fourth word of Jesus from the cross:

A.B. Simpson was the founder of the Christian and Missionary alliance which was an organized movement of world evangelism. We can read the biography of A.B. Simpson in an excellent book with a title, “Wingspread” written by A.W. Tozer. Having received salvation, A.B. Simpson began his ministry and his growth in life was rapid and tremendous. But at one period, he could experience physical weakness and spiritual darkness. In his heart of hearts, he felt like screaming, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Prayer and Bible reading could not help him out of the miserable situation. It took many days for him to get out of the mire of spiritual weariness that entrapped him.

A.W. Tozer writes that losing the presence of God and sudden doubting of God is the hard time which is a part of our Christian life. He says, “Such times are quite common in the lives of ardent devotees of God who have the passion to do something for Him. The dark situations are the opportunities for us to cling tightly to God alone with faith and without relying on our emotions and circumstances.

The book of Psalms celebrates the fellowship and intimacy between man and God and also the nature and essence of such relationship. David who rejoicing says in Psalm 16:11 that, “…In your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” yells and screams in Psalm22:1 saying, “My God, My God why have you forsaken me?” If we look back on the history of the church, we can come across so many great souls who had experienced such situations in their lives as a witness. Christ Jesus also encountered the bitter moments of God’s face being hidden when He was on the cross. When He underwent the agonizing hours, He also screamed just like David. So, Christ Jesus very well knows all our bitter experiences, our pain and sufferings.

Beloved let us be still and rest with faith when we are confronted with such spiritual darkness in our lives. When we keep fellowship with other believers, certainly the Lord shall lift up the light of His countenance upon us very soon.
