Behold your mother!
“…Jesus… said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” – John 19:26
The third word of Jesus from the cross:
All the seven sayings of Jesus from the cross contain special meaning and significance. Generally, when a person is on his death bed, he hands over his responsibilities to his dear ones. A father may entrust everything either to his wife or to his eldest son. In the same manner, Christ Jesus, who is so compassionate, gave the responsibility of caring His widowed mother to His beloved disciple John. Christ Jesus accomplished His mission assigned to Him by His Father within 33 ½ years of His walk on earth.
Mary was the most blessed woman in the world as she was chosen by God to bear His own son. She was gifted to bring forth the son of God into the world. But Alas, the prophecy that, “A sword shall pierce through thy own soul” was fulfilled. Unable to bear the sight of Jesus who was pierced on the cross, she broke down and wept bitterly. Whether Mary thought about her future and her forsaken situation or not but Jesus showed great concern for His mother in the midst of His agony and anguish. When Christ Jesus was nailed to the cross, His disciples abandoned Jesus. Only John the best friend of Jesus was standing by Mary. Thinking that John, could feel the burden of His heart and be the suitable caretaker, Jesus assigned the responsibility of looking after His mother to John. Jesus has set an example and shown how to take care of our parents and to provide for them.
Beloved, we also have the obligation to support our parents. We need to carry out the responsibility. Nowadays after marriage the children go for work to a faraway place and country. They hardly find time to think about their obligation to help their parents. They do not remember that it is a blessing to honor and provide for their parents. After inheriting the properties of the parents, they forsake them. The fifth commandment is the first one with promise. It says, “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land.” Let us imitate Jesus and live as blessed off springs in the world.
