Do we have understanding?

“…Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” – Luke 23:34

The first word of Jesus from the cross:
Who was responsible in the crucifixion of Christ Jesus? Or what was the cause for the death of Jesus on the cross? If we search, we find the answer in Isaiah 53:5. It is written, “…He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities.” So, you and I and every one on earth are responsible for Jesus being nailed to the cross. But at the same time, when Jesus was hanging on the cross, for whom was He interceding and praying for forgiveness? 

The Jews especially the Pharisees and Sadducees of those days conspired against Jesus and crucified Him craftily. Right from bribing Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus up to pressurizing Pilot to consent, all the events proved that they were the cause for His death. Pharisees who sought God and searched the Scriptures and Sadducees were sure and certain that they were 100% right in the matter of Jesus Christ. That was the reason why Jesus Christ prayed to Father to forgive them as they did not know what they were doing.

The underlying thought behind the first word of Christ Jesus from the cross is that the matter that is considered absolutely correct by us may be 100% wrong in the view of God. God is merciful to forgive us in such matters. But we need to search and examine ourselves to find out in which matters we lack wisdom and understanding. Let us pray as David prays in Psalm 139:24 saying, “See if there are any wicked ways in me and lead in the way everlasting.” Let us not rely on our intelligence in whatever work we perform. 

Instead let us think twice if it will be pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. Ask God for the Spirit of wisdom and understanding and a wise and understanding heart. Let us strive hard to get rid of such mistakes when they are revealed to us through the Scriptures or someone.
