What a great sacrifice!
“…we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” - 1 John 3:16
The picture of the “Praying Hands” is well known to everyone. But many of us are unaware of the affecting story behind the picture of the “Praying Hands” In the 15th century there lived a large family with 18 children in a small village in England. The father found it hard to make both ends meet. Both the boys Albrecht and Albert wanted to be artists. But the parents could not afford to send both to the art school as they desired.
So the two brothers made a pact. They would toss the coin and the loser of the coin would go to work in the coal mine near their house to support his brother during his 4 years of study. After 4 years they would reverse the role. Albrecht won the toss and pursued his dream of becoming an artist. Albert was doing the risky mining work.
After 4 years, a warm welcome with the grand feast was given to the young and aesthetic artist. At the end of the feast, Albrecht joyfully told his brother that he could study art then. But his brother broke down sobbing. He showed his brother how his hands were damaged while mining. His hands were rough, disfigured and arthritic and he could not even hold a brush or pen. As a token of respect and to show his gratitude for his brother’s selfless sacrifice, Albrecht drew the famous ink and pencil sketch of his brother’s disfigured “Praying Hands”. Thus the simple drawing has become world famous picture reminding our need to pray.
Let us remember the sacrifice made by Christ Jesus for our sins. Jesus was bruised from head to foot and he was disfigured. He voluntarily offered Himself to be crucified. It is not enough if we hang the picture of Jesus on the cross on the walls. Let us give our heart to God and show God’s love and concern to others.
