Present sufferings are light

“…the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” – Romans 8:18

During World War II, Eisenhower served as the supreme commander and achieved five star rank of General of the Army. When he first joined for military training, he could not bear the hardships he underwent. Each day he posted a letter to his father describing his sufferings and challenges. He expressed his hardships saying, “Dad, I have to get up at 4 O’clock every morning and run twenty miles. Our training venue is in a hot desert area where temperature is 40 to 45 degrees. During the training session, only 100 ml milk is provided.” He wrote a hundred such agonizing letters to his father. Not a single reply was sent to him by his father.

Later the only reply and the answer to the hundred letters of his son was written in a postcard. His father wrote the following short story. Two persons were thrown into the prison. One of them spent his days pitying himself for his miserable plight, shedding tears looking at the floor of the prison cell. The other man spent his days happily looking at the lofty sky, and the bright light and the beauty of the stars through the rusty window. After finishing the story, his father had raised a question, “Who do you resemble? Eisenhower was rejuvenated and encouraged by the incident and he accomplished the training with distinction. Later he was an American military officer. He became the 34th President of the United States.

The sufferings of apostle Paul is beyond description. He endured all hardships patiently for Christ Jesus. He did not lose heart or go weary but he walked worthy of the calling with which he was called. He believed that the light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory.

Beloved, we may encounter a lot of hardships. If our mind is self-obsessed with the thoughts of our sufferings, they may look huge. But our hardships are temporary and transient. They will pass away soon. They are nothing compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us. So let us be of good cheer.
