Spirit of humility

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” - Matthew 5:3

The former President of America Abraham Lincoln’s father was a shoe maker. On the first day as Abraham Lincoln stepped into give his Presidential inauguration address, in the middle an aristocrat stood up to belittle him and passed comment saying, “Mr. Lincoln you should not forget that your father made shoes for my family and I am wearing those shoes.” Lincoln replied humbly saying, “How perfect and durable are the shoes made by my dad! If your shoes have any complaint, I can make another pair for you. I do not mind making shoes, even though I am the President. I take pride on being the son of a shoe-maker.” His lofty thoughts were expressed in a very humble manner. 

In today’s devotion we read that David was bringing up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the city of David with gladness. David rejoiced and danced before the Lord with all his might. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal, David’s wife and the daughter of Saul looked through a window and despised him in her heart. She demeaned him saying, “How glorious was the king of Israel today in the eyes of the maids of his servants as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovering himself!” But David did not judge her for demeaning him. Being the king and her husband, he could have reprimanded or chastised her but he said humbly, “I will be more undignified than this and will be humble in my own sight.” They are not superficial words. They reflect the humble spirit of king David. He was aware in his spirit of his emptiness and his desperate need for God. Yes, blessed are the humble in spirit. 

Beloved, how about us? What is our mindset when we are put to shame in front of others? It is very difficult to confront humiliation and shame. Only those who are spiritually mellowed can accept such mortification with the humble spirit. Let our thoughts, mind and spirit be lowly and humble. Certainly, we are blessed in God’s sight and the kingdom of heaven belongs to us!
