Keep safe the eyes 

“The eye that mocks his father and scorns obedience to his mother, the raven of the valley will pick it out and the young eagle will eat it.” - Proverbs 30:17

The first and foremost purpose in our lives is to please the Lord God, our creator. When we meditate on the word of God, we come to know what all pleases God. The fifth commandment is the first commandment with promise. What does Exodus 20:12 say to us? It says, “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land.” The act of honoring must emerge from heart and it must be demonstrated in our words and deeds. 

King Solomon had exhibited a very good example of honoring parents in his life. We read in 1King 2:19 that, when Solomon saw his mother, Bathsheba coming to speak to him, he rose up to meet her and set a throne for his mother near his throne at his right hand. God has promised goodness and long life to those who honor their parents duly in Ephesians 6:2, 3. 

Beloved, do you take heed to give honor to your parents? It is written in Deuteronomy 27:16 that “Cursed is the one who treats his father or his mother with contempt.” Proverb 30:17 warns us that if we mock and scorn our parents the raven of the valley will take out our eyes. We read in 1 John 2:11 that, “He who hates his brother is in darkness and walks and did not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” The feeling of animosity casts us into spiritual darkness. The darkness causes a bewildered state of mind and one may lose peace and quietness in his life. One who condemns his parents also experiences the same feelings. The same fact is revealed in crow picking out the eye to blind it. So let us treat our parents with love and give them honor and safeguard our spiritual light and protect our eyes.
