Truth conveyed by the ark of gopher wood 

“Make yourself an ark of Gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, cover it inside and outside with pitch.” – Genesis 6:14 

Mala and Kavitha were good friends. They were pursuing a degree in the same college. Kavitha was from a non-Christian background while Mala was delighted in praying and reading the Scriptures. She was liked by everyone as she moved with everyone in a friendly way. She was excellent both in studies and in sports. But her friend was completely opposite to her. She was fond of spending her time in worldly pleasures and things of the world. She was not interested in her studies. 

Once, Kavitha put forth a question to Mala. She said to Kavitha sadly, “We have been close friends since childhood. But there are many differences between us. How is it possible for you alone to stand first in everything?” Mala moved closer to her friend and said, “I spend the first hour of each day with my creator, my Lord. Before speaking to anyone, I sit in God’s presence. I listen to His word. As I begin each day with Him, I am protected from all evil and temptation and I am able to overcome worldly lust and pleasures.” Kavitha was moved by Mala’s witnessing life. Gradually, she too accepted Jesus as her savior and there was a transformation in her life. 

In the Bible God told Noah to build an ark of gopher wood.  Do you know why gopher wood was chosen by God? It is a very hardwood with a smooth surface. Moreover, it was covered with pitch both inside and outside. We all know that pitch is a waterproof covering. So, it protected the ark from dust and water. It was in water but was not affected by it. In the same manner although we are in the world, we are not of the world. We should be separated from the world by not conforming to the worldly things and lusts. Noah and his household were kept alive in the ark. Likewise let us lead a witnessing life without getting attached to the world but staying detached from it with the help of our Lord God.
