Don’t be a stumbling block

“…whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” – Matthew 18:6

Once, Gandhiji “The father of our nation” went with his friends to Cathedral church in Transvaal, a province in South Africa. He sat at the last row and was waiting to hear the message of a prolific pastor. The usher of the church approached him and said, “This church is not for the Asians; you have separate churches. You will not be permitted to attend this particular church as it is exclusively for Whites” Gandhiji remarked that it was a great surprise to hear that there was no place for Jesus in that church. The usher wrathfully exclaimed to Gandhiji, “How dare you say that Jesus is not in this famous church!” Gandhiji retorted saying, “You don’t let any Asian enter your church. Then how can Jesus who is from Asia come into your church?” The usher put his head down in shame.

How excellent it would be if Gandhiji had accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. If he had received Jesus, it would have been a great blessing to India. The fake Christians who lived with the belief in casteism had offended ended and hindered him from accepting Jesus. How awful it is to notice the sin of segregation that is practiced in churches! God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth. Our heart rejoices when we see zealous people who take a stand for Christ. But at the same time, it is woeful that the venom of casteism in the heart of some people prevents others from drawing closer to Jesus. Caste discrimination has led to different churches based on their casteism. Spiritual revival is possible if we change our mindset to end casteism.

Beloved young reader, how about us? Is the feeling of casteism deeply rooted in our heart and creating superiority or inferiority complex in us? Each action or deed of ours may create or break the personality of others. Have we ever tried to build up the ruined hearts of the people? Or else are we tearing apart the one who is growing in Christ? Let us ponder. If we belittle or undervalue someone’s education, qualification, status or caste, we are despising God the creator of all mankind. We can never forget that human beings are the image of God. We all have been made in God’s likeness. Thus, let us live happily in one accord, in harmony and in unity remembering the precious blood shed by Jesus for us.

- J. Santosh
