We are not doing right

“…I took the sash from the place where I had hidden it; and there was the sash, ruined. It was profitable for nothing.” – Jeremiah 13:7

Today let us look into a few personalities who hid their gifts and talents bestowed on them by God. In the 13th chapter of the book of Jeremiah we find that the linen sash that was hidden in a hole in a rock by the Euphrates for many days was ruined when taken and it was of no use to anyone. In case we have hidden our gifts and talents so far, let us resolve to bring them out and use them to do God’s work in the New Year.

In the book of Judges, we read that Samson spent his time with a harlot in Gaza and with Delilah in the valley of Sorek, forgetting and hiding his great strength and his close fellowship with God. He became oblivious to God’s mission to free the Israelites from Philistines and thus he got corrupted and met his tragic end.

In the gospel of Matthew, we come across a certain man who had received one talent from his master. He dug in the ground and buried the talent. As he was an unprofitable servant, he was cast into the outer darkness where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth. If we remain useless doing nothing for Christ, we will be abandoned. So let us utilize our talents and gifts to do God’s work and prepare ourselves to enter into the joy of the Lord.

Beloved, we learn a lesson from the good works of the four leprous men lived in the days of Elisha, the prophet. There was a great famine in Samaria. The four leprous men at the entrance of the gate, went into the camps of Syrians at twilight and took gold, silver and clothing from two tents and hid them. Then they realized that what they were doing was not just. They said “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news. If we remain silent, some punishment will come upon us. Let us go and tell the King’s household”. So the Israelites went out and plundered tents and rejoiced. When are we going to have a good and clear conscience to feel, “We are not doing right?”
