Be not conceited

 

“I say… to everyone. Not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think but to think soberly...” – Romans 12:3 

 

Muhammad Ali was the greatest and the most celebrated heavy weight boxer of all time. His boxing record summary tells us that he had won 56 fights out of 61 he participated. His personal catch phrase is,” I am the greatest ever” He bragged about his power and success. Once Muhammad Ali boarded the plane. Just before it’s taken off, the stewardess reminded Muhammad Ali to fasten his seat belt. Ali declared that “I am a superman; I do need no seat belt.” The stewardess retorted saying, “Superman, does not need airplane either.” Muhammad was speechless and he fastened his belt at once. So, he had thought of himself more highly out of pride.

 

The Biblical character King Nebuchadnezzar the Biblical figure with pride stated, “Is not this great Babylon that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” As God resists the proud, His decree came upon him. When the word was still in the King’s mouth, he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen. Why was he humiliated and put to shame? Because of his pride. When his understanding returned to him, he humbled himself and blessed, praised and honored God. He was restored to his kingdom and excellent majesty was added to him.

 

Pride is one of the deadliest sins. If our heart swells with pride, God comes to resist the proud. Sometimes we think proudly that only we are worthy of doing a particular work or ministry and others are unfit. Sometimes we are paralyzed by the thought that we are good for nothing and we are not having any innate talent. We should feel neither superior nor inferior. We are expected to do something for our Lord. Let us not give room for pride. May God show mercy on us and make us honorable vessels prepared for every good work and to bring glory to God.
