“…I am the Lord who sanctifies you” - Leviticus 20:8

In the 19th century, a certain man named Subramani was arrested and thrown into the prison for committing twin murders in Jaffna. The judge heard his case and passed a death sentence to him. In those days Brackenridge was doing prison ministry in Ceylon. He presented the gospel of Jesus Christ in such a way that Subramani received Christ as his savior. He read the Bible and grew strong in faith. The convicted criminal experienced God’s love, grace and forgiveness and enjoyed the peace of God which surpasses all understanding. He shared his testimony with his fellow prisoners. Thus, he was able to confront his execution without any fear about death. Before his death he wrote the song which proclaims “Yesu nesikkirar”. This hymn is sung in churches even today and the name of the Lord is glorified.

Acts 16 tells the story of Paul and Silas who were thrown into prison for preaching the gospel. The Bible tells us that “at midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake. All the doors were open and everyone’s chains were loosened. The keeper of the prison woke from sleep. On seeing the prison door open, supposing the prisoners had fled, he drew his sword to kill himself. Paul prevented him from doing it and he availed the opportunity to preach the gospel to him. He believed on the Lord Jesus Christ. The keeper and his household repented and accepted Jesus and were saved.

Dear readers, it is not a problem even if we have committed deadly sins or branded as a criminal. Once we confess our sins and implore Jesus to forgive our trespasses and save us and make us holy. God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins by the blood of Jesus and change us into a new creation. So let us accept Jesus Christ and receive salvation and begin a new life without the fear of death.
