Compassion

 

“Let the wicked forsake his ways… Let him return to the Lord. And he will have mercy on him” – Isaiah 55:7

 

The funeral of general William Booth, the founder of the Salvation 

Army took place in a grand manner. Thousands of mourners made their way to the funeral service to pay their last respect to him. It was a rare sight to see the queen amid the crowd. The queen noticed an ordinary woman wearing a crumpled dress standing near the casket. The queen asked the woman how she had come to know Booth. The woman witnessed saying,” Booth was so compassionate towards wretched people like me”. George White Field, a God’s man says, “Compassion means identifying oneself emphatically with the brokenness of another person.” Compassion is not some kind of sensation or just feeling pity. Compassion goes straight into the heart.

 

All of us who have come into this world suffer in different ways. Each one is drawn away by his own desire and enticed to commit sins and as a result we are weighed down by sufferings. There are many people who suffer from deadly diseases, burden of debts and carnality. Sometimes we lose peace of mind and experience grief and sorrow due to the works or our children of relatives.

 

Our savior Jesus Christ bore all our sins and griefs and carried our sorrows and misery. He took all our sufferings upon Himself. A crown of thorns was set on His head for our wrong thoughts in our mind. His side was pierced with a spear for the evil thoughts that come out of our heart. His hands and feet were nailed to the cross for the sins committed by our hands and feet. Let us ponder the compassion of Jesus who came in the flesh into this world to redeem humankind that is engulfed in sins and sufferings.

  

We have received God’s forgiveness, salvation and we are justified by the grace and compassion of Christ Jesus. So, let us also be compassionate to others and reflect the qualities of Jesus Christ. Let us forgive others just as God forgave us. Let us forbear one another without complaining and judging them.
