Selfish Christmas
“…the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” – 1John 3:8
In a certain remote tribal village, many people were affected by a strange disease. There were neither hospitals nor doctors available in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Hearing the miserable plight of the people, a certain doctor volunteered to help them with medicines. He had planned to stay and treat them for a few days and return home. When the doctor stepped into the border of the village, the people welcomed him in a grand manner with music band. They celebrated his arrival holding feast for three days and he was taken out on a procession. He tried to convince them that he had come only to give medicine but they were too excited about his arrival to forget all about their malady and the available medicine. On the day of his departure, he regretted that the purpose of his visit was to heal the people of their disease but he could not accomplish his mission because of the people’s ignorance. They focused on his arrival but failed to utilize the opportunity to get cured by taking medicine. How pathetic it is!
“The son of God was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil” But the works of the devil is being revealed in every human being. The work of the flesh is evident in wrath, envy, fret, hatred, bitterness greed, pride and revenge. Wickedness and filthiness are prevalent in society because the individual has yielded his heart to satan’s reign. To destroy such work of satan, the savior must come into our heart. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
Let us not be like the tribals who concentrated on welcoming the doctor but forgot to get treated. Let us allow God to work in us. If He is not at work in us, all out celebrations, worship and praises are futile. They will never please Him but provoke Him to anger. He will rejoice in us and in our worship only if we have received forgiveness, salvation and Holiness which He has prepared for us. He will shed tears if we observe the birth of Jesus Christ without repenting of our sins. Let us celebrate the festival, keeping in mind the purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world.
