The voice of the innkeeper
“…laid Him in a manager, because there was no room for them in the inn.” – Luke 2:7
Hello friends! I have been longing to speak you for a very long time. Since this is the month of December, it has become a requisite for me to talk to you. I am an innkeeper. I shall speak to you directly. A decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world must be registered. So, all the people were moving to their destination. I owned an inn in Bethlehem, the city of David in Judea. In the beginning I could only make both ends meet with the earnings. Then I was flourishing. My inn was full. Not even a single room was available for booking. So, with a great sigh of relief, I was seated in a chair. There was a knock at the door. When I opened, I saw a carpenter named Joseph and his wife Mary who was expecting. They had come from Nazareth in Galilee. With fear and reluctance Joseph asked me if they could get accommodation in the inn. When they heard that there was no room, they were disheartened. As they seemed to be very poor and in urgent need of a room, I had an urge to help them out.
I with much hesitation asked if they could stay in the manger behind the inn? They accepted it with whole heart. At night a dear little baby boy was born to Mary. Although the baby was wrapped in swaddling clothes, the face of the baby was shining gloriously. The baby stole the heart of everyone with His charm. I could not believe the miracles that happened later. The birth of the child was not informed to anyone but many shepherds came to see Jesus with joy. When enquired, we found that they were informed by an angel. Later I saw camels coming to our city. They stopped at the house where Jesus was. Three wisemen from East only had come to Bethlehem on camels to worship the new born King of Jews. We exclaimed with astonishment, “The King! They explained that they were led and guided by the star. They worshipped the baby and presented their gifts namely gold, Frankincense and myrrh. I was overwhelmed with pride because the King of Jews was born in my manger. I was appeased myself that I gave them at least the manger without sending them away. Till today lakhs of visitors throng my manger to see the birth place of the Lord Jesus. Yes, it was a disgusting and unfrequented place. It was a place with bad odor. But as Jesus was born there, it became a valuable place. If we give place to Jesus in our sin-stained heart to be born, there will be more joy in heaven.
May be our heart is filthy like the manger. But when we give place to Jesus certainly our lives will be transformed into a wonderful and a blessed one.
