Zeal of the widow

 

“…this woman was a widow…. who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day” – Luke 2:37 

 

We live amid women who long and sigh saying, “I have lost all my joy. I am advancing in years. What can I achieve now? Can I go anywhere and do anything for Jesus at this age? But there is a woman who challenges us at the age of eighty-four and affirms that we can serve God and do ministry even if we have lost the prime of youth, health and hope. Who is that? She is none other than Anna, the prophetess who was in the temple to give thanks to the Lord when Jesus was taken there for the first time to be presented to the Lord. 

 

Anna, a prayer warrior was eagerly looking for the birth of Jesus and rejoiced to behold the baby. She was married for seven years and then widowed. No information about her children is furnished in the Bible. But the Holy Spirit has written clearly the good works done by her. She never departed from the temple. What a striking testimony! 

 

My grandmother accepted Christ Jesus as her savior, when missionary Ragland preached the gospel in Sivakasi. She had never missed the services on Sundays, although she was beaten by her husband Vadivel Murugan, my grandfather. She was zealous to go to church to worship the living God. My grandmother’s zeal and passion had great influence on her grandchildren. Her godliness, devotion and ferver gave rise to her descendants who are devout church goers and worshipers. Dear readers, do you long to worship God in church and rejoice in God’s presence?

 

Even youth and middle-aged people find it difficult to fast and pray. But Hannah had set a good example. She had never left the temple. She worshipped and served God night and day with fasting and praying. If we love God genuinely, we will take a resolution to stand at the gap, fast and pray for the perishing souls. 

 

Let us love God with our whole heart just like Anna. We need not be house bound due to aging. Let us pray continuously and proclaim that salvation is only through Jesus, the Messiah. May God help us to live for Him.
