Guard of the Heart

 

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issue of life.” – Proverbs 4:23

 

Two farmers who were friends had some land that had become barren. As they had heavy and excessive rainfall that year, they had an idea of cultivating the wasteland. They were sure to get good yield from whatever item they planted. They planned to grow tomatoes. When the seeds grew into baby plants the first farmer made fence around the land and he weeded the land often and watered the plants regularly. The second farmer mocked at him saying that he had no other work and that was why he enclosed the land and weeded it. He felt that it was enough if the plants were watered properly. The plants grew well. It was the time for harvesting the tomatoes. The land was filled with a bounty of tomatoes.

 

Every evening they went to monitor the plants. The second farmer proudly said, “I neither placed the fence nor rooted out the weeds. But my land also has a good yield. You had wasted your time and money unnecessarily.” They decided to harvest the tomatoes the next morning. They set off to the field with sacks in the early morning. They could not bear to see the sight of the unprotected land of the second farmer. Someone had been spying and at the right time they had stolen very easily as the land was unprotected without an enclosure. The farmer was soaked in sorrow and returned home with empty hands. When it was time for him to enjoy the fruit of his labor, He just missed it because of his negligence.

 

An unprotected land is unsafe. In the same manner an unguarded heart causes harm to our soul. The bible says that we must keep our heart with diligence. How can we protect our heart? The word of God is the fence that can keep our heart safe. If we are not vigilant, satan is ready to sow weeds in our heart to spoil it. We need the fence which is the word of God to resist temptations and to keep back from presumptuous sins. If our heart is kept diligent, living water will flow from deep within us and that is a blessing not only to us but also to many others.
