Ecstasy in agony

“…Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God…” – Acts 16:25

Sadhu Sundar Singh is known as “the apostle with the bleeding feet” Once when he was reaching out to the Nepalese in a village, he was caught and put in prison as the country forbade the gospel of Christ to be preached. Even in prison he preached the gospel to the prisoners. He spent his time sharing the love of Jesus to them. So, they beat him and stripped of his clothes and threw him into a filthy cowshed and tied his hands and feet to a post. The jailor threw leeches all over Sundar’s body and they began to suck his blood. He burst into hymns to praise God despite being weak from his suffering and loss of blood. He prayed fervently to God. They were astonished to see him so joyful amid such suffering. So, assuming that Sundar was insane they set him free. Even though he was very weak, he went to nearby villages to preach. He states about his experience in prison as “The prison was like the blessed Heaven as the presence of Christ was with me.”

When Paul and Silas were in Philippi preaching the gospel, the Romans blamed them for teaching customs which were not lawful for them to receive or observe. They rose up against them tore off their clothes and beaten up them with rod. The jailor put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. Although they were weak and in pain, they prayed and sang hymns to God. Suddenly the foundations of the prison were shaken and the chains were loosened. The keeper of the prison was about to kill himself assuming that the prisoners had fled. Paul stopped him from committing suicide and led him and his family in the path of salvation.

Beloved friends, we may feel dismayed when our suffering is unbearable and the burden is too much. We need not fear or worry. The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us. Through our afflictions many people will taste the love of God. We can stand as a witness of God, when the troubles get over. When we surrender ourselves to the cross keeping in mind the coming glory, we can feel ecstasy in agony.
