Yearning and elevation
“Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness…” -Psalms 112:4
A tiled roof cottage was surrounded by the beauty of environment. Hilkia, a twelve-year-old lad was sitting on a stone under the jack fruit tree that was behind the cottage. He was very handsome and smart. Tears were rolling down his sparkling eyes. Why? Because he had stuttering lips. His two brothers and sisters talked so fluently but Hilkia alone could speak only with breaks and pauses. He studied in the middle school, in his village Parapuvillai. Forty students appeared for the class 8th examination. Hilkia was one among the twelve students who passed the exam. His teachers were amazed at his excellent performance. They cheered him up and encouraged him to read the Bible and pray and obtain a good testimony. He was obedient to his parents and helpful to his mother in household work and to his father in the field.
For doing class nine he had to go to Karungal Market which was 5KM away from his village. School fee was to be paid. In those days there were no transport facilities. The parents decided to send only Kilkia’s elder brother to high school due to family circumstances. Hilkia wept as he was craving to go to school. Hilkia’s mother enquired and understood the ambition of her son. She made up her mind to educate her son by all means. Hilkia walked the distance of 5 KM along with his friends on barefoot and studied. He had only one shirt in good condition to wear. He washed it daily and put it on. At times he had to wear the improperly dried shirt. But he was zealous in the pursuit of knowledge. In the year 1956, 38 students took the S.S.L.C exam in Reniel High school and only 5 could clear the exam. Hilkia was one of the five students who passed the exam. In the meantime, he had been praying earnestly with faith to change his stammering lips and to help him to speak without stutter. God answered his fervent prayer and he was blessed with the gift of speaking fluently and singing sweetly. Moreover, he obtained a post graduate degree in Hindi also. He received Sahitya Academy award in Hindi. He worked as a Hindi Pandit in a government school. He got married to sister Daisy, who was a Tamil Pandit. When his wife had God’s call for ministry, they quit their government job and did ministry in Uttar Pradesh and won many souls for Christ. He was exalted because he had learnt to pray earnestly to receive miracles even from childhood.
Today is our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday. As he was very fond of children, his birthday is celebrated as children’s day as he wished. Our Lord Jesus Christ loves children dearly. When children talk to Him through prayer, He listens carefully and answers, blesses and exalts them at the right time.
