Loving Rebuke
“The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child lift to himself brings shame to his mother” - Proverbs 29:15
Now a days, the subject of spanking the children is baffling to many parents. There arises misunderstanding between father and mother regarding this matter. To spank or not to spank is the question. Let us look into the Holy Bible for the correct answer. What does the Bible say about spanking children? Yes, spanking imparts wisdom and delivers the soul from hell.
But parents spank the kids when they are very small and innocent. They hit the child, even if the child cries without tracing out the reason for the cry. The child may be sick or in pain due to insect bit and so on. Only when they are 3 years and above, they can make out right from wrong. As they grow up if they deliberately do something wrong, we should rebuke them with love. A warning can be given. If the child responses to the verbal rebuke, a spanking is not necessary. If the child does not correct himself and keeps doing wrong knowingly, he needs smacking.
When children come of age it is not wise on the part of the parents to hit the children. It is enough if we reprimand firmly. Thrashing the young boys and girls will not change their behavior. The youth will feel being disgraced and humiliated when hit by the parents. Their heart is hardened and their anger and range is intensified. Thus, parents can admonish them and pray to the Lord for their transformation. Nothing is hard with the Lord.
In foreign countries children get corrupted and go astray as they are not reprimanded by the parents when they go wrong. The laws of those countries are in favor of their way of parenting. In the matter of parenting the culture of our Indian nation is par excellence. Any how our chastisement should not be violent. We should win the confidence of our children so that they accept that they are corrected out of love.
When the father reproves the child, the mother should not come between. If she disagrees with his way of doing it, it should be argued in private and then taken decision. When the father is blamed in front of children, they will mistrust him. the children should understand that their father and mother are doing everything in one accord. If parents are diligent to discipline the children, we can create a virtuous generation.
