Joseph or Samson?

“Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids.” – Proverbs 6:25

Chaste means being pure, modest and free from taint. Chastity is common for both men and women. The desire of the eyes makes us sin. That is why Jesus said, “…whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Today let us focus our eyes on two biblical youth namely Joseph and Samson.

Joseph was a handsome and good looking youth. The Lord was with Joseph though he was sold as a slave in Egypt. Joseph could visualize in his mind’s eye, that he was being watched by the beautiful eyes of Jesus. He was God fearing as he felt the presence of God when alone or with his parents. His fear of God exalted him and he was saved from committing deadly sins. Generally, a youth will be attracted and be ready to enjoy the worldly pleasures in secret when chances come his way. But as he feared God, he resisted it saying, “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” and fled from the snares of sin.

Samson was destined by God to do great things. His mission was to judge Israel and save them from Philistine’s oppression. Samson was morally weak and yielded to the lust of flesh. Of course, his parents were with him but he had no desire to keep himself holy. He was regardless of his high calling. Thus, he defiled his body and met with a tragic end.

How is our life? Are we like Joseph or Samson? Are we leading a presumptuous life without any fear for God and disregarding the wise counsel given by our parents? We have to commit ourselves not to be led by our eyes and hearts. Samson’s life stands as a warning. At times married men and women become slaves to the desire of the flesh. They are deceived and misled by social medias. We must make covenant with our eyes and take our thoughts captive. Let us flee the lust of the eyes and keep ourselves holy with the help of the Holy Spirit.
