Thumb

 

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:7 

 

Richard Wurmbrand was doing ministry among godless Russians. Once he happened to meet a Russian couple who were sculptors. The sculptor narrated an interesting episode happened in their lives that made them accept the existence of God. The sculptor began saying, “One day when we were working on a statue, my wife asked me, “How about the thumb? If the thumb was not positioned opposite other fingers and if our fingers were like toes in a row, we could not hold a hammer, tool, book or a piece of bread.

 

Human life would be impossible without this little thumb. Now, who made the thumb so wisely? We both learnt in our school and know that the heaven and earth exist by themselves. They are not created by God. So I have learnt and so I believe. But if God did not create the heaven and earth if He created only the thumb, He would be praise worthy for this little thing. We praise Edison and Bell and Stephenson who had invented the electric bulb, telephone, railways. But why should we not praise the one who has invented the thumb? If Edison did not have a thumb, he would have invented nothing. It is right to worship God who made the thumb.” The sculptor became very angry as husbands very often do when their wives tell them wise things. He said, “Don’t speak stupidities.” But the wise question of his wife made him think. So, they decided to worship ‘Nobody’ who has made the thumb. Their faith increased and believed God to be the creator of everything. 

 

We read in the Holy Bible that the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night and said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” Solomon said, “Give to your servant an understanding heart” His wish pleased the Lord; He gave him a wise and understanding heart. 

 

Beloved in Christ, we get into troubles owing to our unwise actions. Solomon asked God for wisdom and discernment. What do we pray for? Let us ponder. Wisdom and discernment are important. Each day let us ask God for wisdom that is from above and act accordingly.
